The delightful village of Loose is unique in this part of the country,
having cottages rising in terraces above the stream. A viaduct, built by
Telford in 1829, carries the main road above the Loose Valley.
Large stones set at the side of the road into Maidstone were once used to
tie ropes which were used to help pull heavy wagons up the hill.
The power of the Loose stream, the purity of the spring water and the
availability of Fullers Earth helped the woollen trade prosper in the 16th
Century.
